Be a Responsible Retailer

Do Your Part: Sell alcohol responsibly.

Protecting our youth makes good business sense. It’s not as difficult as you might think to protect young people from underage exposure to alcohol.

Helping protect kids from alcohol is a win-win

By taking the steps to keep our young people safe, you will show others you care. You will increase your positive reputation in the community, avoid costly fines and citations and contribute to building a healthy, productive community with less crime.

Responsible Retailers Initiative

The Responsible Retailers Initiative of the Orange Partnership for Alcohol and Drug Free Youth recognizes local retailers who have made the commitment to responsible alcohol sales.

Retail responsibly. Here are a few suggestions:

  • Have every employee complete ABC Commission-approved training in responsible alcohol sales.
  • Check IDs thoroughly and consistently for everyone who appears to be under the age of 30.
  • Post clear signage by coolers and at registers that patrons appearing under 30 WILL be carded.
  • Reduce excessive alcohol advertising both inside and outside your store.
  • Make sure alcohol displays and advertising are not at child eye level or near popular youth items such as candy, soda, and snacks.
  • Do not display large quantities of alcohol such as stacked cases of beer in the front of the store.

Check IDs thoroughly. Here’s how:

Know the license color code and shape

North Carolina uses a “stoplight” color theme to make it easy to check the age of your customers. The “direction” of the license will differ as well.

Know the person

Compare the photograph and physical description to the person standing in front of you.

Know a real license

Real North Carolina drivers’ licenses have several holograms and watermarks - an airplane in the middle, county names listed along the top edge, and several NC DMV logos. Does the watermark match the picture in the bottom corner?

Know a fake license

A fake license may be frayed or worn at the edges or it may feel uneven to the touch.

Remember - when in doubt, DON’T SELL!

Establish a Written Alcohol Sales Policy

If you do not already have one, develop a written policy for alcohol sales and service and make sure your employees understand and remember it. You can see a sample policy here.
